Your Child's Cold

Comforting Them When They Have a Cold

There are many things you can do for your child to help them (and you) get through a cold. Start with these few tips, and consult a doctor if your child doesn't seem to be getting better.

  • Use a cool-mist humidifier in your child's room. This can help to moisten the air and clear your child's nasal passages. Be sure to clean the humidifier often.
  • To help thin your child's nasal mucus, use saline nose drops. Ask your pediatrician which ones to use.
  • Clear your child's nose with a suction bulb. First squeeze the bulb. Then, gently put the rubber tip into one nostril and slowly release the bulb. This suction will draw the clogged mucus out of the nose. This works best for babies younger than 6 months.
  • Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and fluids.
  • Infants’ TYLENOL® or Children’s TYLENOL® can help reduce your child’s fever and ease aches and pains from a cold. Be sure to ask your doctor about the right dose before giving Infants’ TYLENOL® to your baby.

If your child is under the age of 4, using OTC cough and cold medicines is not recommended.
