Cold Comfort

You may think that as soon as you hear others coughing, sniffling, and sneezing, it's inevitable that you're next. But believe it or not, it's possible to sneak through the season without getting the cold that everybody else has. Below are some tips on what to do and what to avoid. And just in case you still catch a cold, we've even got some tips to help you feel better until the cold goes away.

Tips for Preventing Colds
  • Frequently disinfect surfaces in your home and office-especially things like phones and doorknobs that many people touch.
  • Wash your hands often.
  • Keep your fingers away from your eyes and nose to help prevent the spread of germs.
  • Avoid close contact with people who have a cold, especially during the first few days their symptoms appear. This is when they are more likely to spread their germs.

Tips for Treating Colds
  • A cold has to run its course (usually around a week), but you can make yourself more comfortable while your body fights it off by getting plenty of fluids.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, such as water and juice. And enjoy a warm bowl of chicken soup. It won't cure your cold, but warm liquids can help soothe a sore throat.
  • Stay comfortable. A humidifier may help ease your congestion and throat discomfort by keeping the air moist.
  • To avoid spreading the illness, try to stay away from others if you can-and wash your hands frequently.
