How is TYLENOL® PM different from Simply Sleep™?


TYLENOL® PM is a pain reliever that also has a sleep aid. It is indicated for the temporary relief of occasional headaches and minor aches and pains with accompanying sleeplessness. Simply Sleep is a sleep aid without a pain reliever. It is designed for people who need help sleeping.


How long does TYLENOL® PM last?

Each gelcap/geltab/caplet of TYLENOL® PM contains 500 mg of the pain reliever, acetaminophen, and 25 mg of the sleep aid, diphenhydramine HCl.


How is TYLENOL® PM different from Benadryl® brand products?
Each gelcap/geltab/caplet of TYLENOL® PM contains 500 mg of the pain reliever, acetaminophen, and 25 mg of the sleep aid, diphenhydramine HCl. Classified as an antihistamine with sedating properties, diphenhydramine is the same active ingredient found in many Benadryl® products.


Does TYLENOL® PM contain aspirin?
TYLENOL® PM does not contain aspirin.

Can I use TYLENOL® PM with my existing medical conditions?
Diphenhydramine, the sleep aid in TYLENOL® PM, can aggravate the following medical conditions:
  • Breathing problems such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis.
  • Glaucoma.
  • Difficulty in urination due to enlargement of the prostate gland.


If you have any of these conditions, do not take TYLENOL® PM unless directed by a doctor.

If you are under a doctor's care for any serious condition or are taking any other drug, you should talk to your doctor if you want to know more or have other questions.


What are the possible side effects of TYLENOL® PM?
TYLENOL® PM contains a sleep aid, diphenhydraminen HCL, that will cause drowsiness. Do not drive a motor vehicle or operate machinery after taking TYLENOL® PM.

If you are under a doctor's care for any serious condition or are taking any other drug, you should talk to your doctor if you want to know more or have other questions.


Can I use TYLENOL® PM if I'm pregnant or nursing?
If you are pregnant or nursing a baby, seek the advice of a health professional before using TYLENOL® PM.


Is TYLENOL® PM habit-forming?
The active ingredients in TYLENOL® PM are not considered habit-forming. Using TYLENOL® PM beyond the two week time period listed on the package label is not recommended unless directed by your doctor.

If sleeplessness persists continuously for more than two weeks, consult your physician. Insomnia may be a symptom of a serious underlying medical illness. Do not take TYLENOL® PM for pain for more than ten days or for a fever for more than three days unless directed by a doctor.

If you have chronic insomnia, contact your doctor to determine the cause of your sleeplessness and appropriate treatment.


Can I take TYLENOL® PM every night?
Use of TYLENOL® PM products beyond the time period listed on the package label is not recommended without the advice of your doctor.

If sleeplessness persists continuously for more than two weeks, consult your physician. Insomnia may be a symptom of a serious underlying medical illness. Do not take TYLENOL® PM for pain for more than ten days or for a fever for more than three days unless directed by a doctor.

Will TYLENOL® PM make me feel groggy in the morning?
When used according to directions on the package label TYLENOL® PM is not expected to cause grogginess the next day. There are many factors that may affect how rested you feel on any given day, including the number of hours you sleep, the underlying condition for which you take a sleep aid, the time that you take a sleep aid, and any other medications you may be taking.


Can TYLENOL® PM make me feel restless, nervous, or sleepless?
Diphenhydramine, the sleep aid in TYLENOL® PM, causes drowsiness and helps the vast majority of people who take it to fall asleep. Some individuals have reported transient restlessness and nervousness while taking TYLENOL® PM which disappears when the product is discontinued.


Can I drink alcohol and take TYLENOL® PM?
Labeling for all OTC pain relievers, including Tylenol, contains an alcohol warning. Labeling for all TYLENOL® products reads as follows:

"If you consume 3 or more alcoholic drinks every day, ask your doctor whether you should take acetaminophen or other pain relievers/fever reducers. Acetaminophen may cause liver damage."

Additionally, the labeling for all products containing an antihistamine (TYLENOL® PM) advises to avoid alcoholic beverages while taking this product.

Do not take TYLENOL® PM if you are taking sedatives or tranquilizers without first consulting your doctor. Do not use TYLENOL® PM with other products containing acetaminophen.

Can I take TYLENOL® PM at night if I took a TYLENOL® product during the day?
Two TYLENOL® PM contain 1000 mg of acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, in addition to the sleep aid diphenhydramine. If you need to take TYLENOL® during the day, the maximum daily dose of acetaminophen is 4000 mg per 24 hours.
