How does phenylephrine compare to pseudoephedrine as far as safety and efficacy?

Pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine are both nasal decongestants that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved as being safe and effective for the treatment of sinus and nasal congestion, when used as directed.

Why is there less acetaminophen per dosage unit in the phenylephrine-containing upper respiratory TYLENOL® products as compared to the pseudoephedrine-containing upper respiratory TYLENOL® products?

Phenylephrine is dosed on a more frequent basis (every 4 hours) than pseudoephedrine (every 4-6 hours). Therefore, the amount of acetaminophen contained in our reformulated TYLENOL® upper respiratory products was decreased to accommodate the more frequent dosing schedule, while not exceeding the daily maximum dose of either product.

Is phenylephrine a restricted decongestant, like pseudoephedrine?

Phenylephrine is a non-restricted decongestant. The current regulations that apply to the sale of pseudoephedrine products do not apply to phenylephrine.

How does phenylephrine work?

Phenylephrine is a nasal decongestant that treats sinus and nasal congestion by narrowing the blood vessels in the nose, leading to a clearing of nasal congestion.

What is the difference between pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine?

Pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine are both nasal decongestants that the FDA has approved as being effective for the treatment of sinus and nasal congestion. Pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine have different dosage recommendations.

Dosage (Maximum Daily Dosage)

Drug Adult/Children 12 years or older
Phenylephrine 10 mg every 4 hours (60 mg)

What is phenylephrine?

Phenylephrine is a nasal decongestant that treats sinus and nasal congestion. The FDA approved phenylephrine as an effective decongestant when used as directed.

What is the difference in dosage of pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine?

Dosage (Maximum Daily Dosage)

Drug Adult/Children 12 years or older
Phenylephrine 10 mg every 4 hours (60 mg)

Do any TYLENOL® products still contain pseudoephedrine?

TYLENOL® Cold Severe Congestion and TYLENOL® Sinus Severe Congestion still contain pseudoephedrine. They are available without a prescription, but only from behind the pharmacy or retail service counter. These products will also be sold through some online retailers who meet certain requirements. Ask your pharmacist about the availability of these products.

Where can I purchase TYLENOL® products containing pseudoephedrine?

TYLENOL® Cold Severe Congestion and TYLENOL® Sinus Severe Congestion may still be purchased from the pharmacy in many retail locations. You do not need a prescription to purchase these products. Ask your pharmacist about the availability of these products.

Have other leading brands changed decongestants?

Some brands have reformulated with the decongestant phenylephrine and some still contain pseudoephedrine and have been moved behind the pharmacy counter. And, others no longer have any decongestant at all.

Why do I need to sign my name when I buy pseudoephedrine products behind the counter?

The decongestant pseudoephedrine can be chemically processed into a drug called methamphetamine. The illegal use of methamphetamine has increased in recent years prompting Congress to pass the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005. The objective of the law is to eliminate the use of pseudoephedrine in the illegal production of methamphetamine. By law, pseudoephedrine products must now be sold behind the pharmacy counter and through some online retailers who meet certain requirements. You do not need a prescription to purchase these products, but there are restrictions on the amount of pseudoephedrine an individual may purchase within a day, and over the course of a month. If you purchase a behind the counter pseudoephedrine product, you may also be asked to show identification and provide additional personal information. We regret any inconvenience you may experience when buying TYLENOL® products containing pseudoephedrine.
