Treating and Preventing Headaches
First things first! There are a few things you can do to get immediate relief. If you have a headache now why not try:
- Taking a hot bath or shower to help relax aching muscles
- Heading out for a brisk walk. Fresh air can work wonders when it comes to headaches
- Trying some simple head and neck stretches
Once you’ve gotten past your initial symptoms, you can start thinking of prevention. Try the following relaxation techniques every day:
- Sit or lie down comfortably, and put one hand on your stomach (just below rib cage).
2. Slowly breathe in through your nose. Notice that your stomach expands outward and upward.
3. Exhale slowly through your nose or mouth, letting your stomach empty and fall.
4. Repeat 10 to 20 times.
Then, make sure you're getting enough sleep and adequate exercise. Try changing your pillow and/or sleep position.
When you’re at work:
- Take frequent computer breaks.
- Don't cradle the phone between your shoulder and ear.
- Avoid slumping at your desk.
The best way to prevent headaches is to find out what triggers affect you. Keep a record of your headaches, and write down what happened in the hours before onset.
- What did you eat?
- What activities were you doing?
- Were there loud noises?
- Were you inside or outside?
- How well did you sleep the night before?
- Did you get any exercise (cardio) the week prior to the headache?
