With medical degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Matthew Abdel practices orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic where he also teaches residents and fellows while conducting both clinical and basic science research.
As a cardiology fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, Dr. LaPrincess Brewer created a program to educate African Americans about cardiovascular disease risk factors where she tries to enlighten people on ways to incorporate healthy lifestyle practices into their daily lives.
With a degree in chemistry from the University of Virginia, Dr. Tobin Dickerson is combining his love of technology and science for the sole purpose of helping those infected with disease on a global scale.
It’s not enough to just develop a treatment,” Dr. Shaan Gandhi says in his doctoral dissertation. “That treatment needs to go to a drug or biotechnology company and be commercialized and marketed. That way, the knowledge we develop at the lab bench can actually make it to the bedside.”
Caring for newborns in the neonatal intensive care nursery at Duke University Hospital is just part of Kayla Hanson’s job. “It’s high acuity care, which I love, but it’s also taking care of the whole family,” she says.
After working with a wide range of patients from Boston to Maine, Dr. Katie Hilo says the most satisfying part of being a pediatric physical therapist is seeing people reach their goals no matter how big or small.
Torn between a love of caring for both humans and animals, Dr. Lesley Parisi was able to utilize her veterinary degree from Tuskegeee University to discover a multitude of opportunities that allowed her to contribute to public health.
Inspired to purpose a career in medicine by a childhood injury suffered in his home country of Nigeria, Nnamdi Gwacham is currently embarking on an education journey at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Attracted to surgery from a young age, Dr. Simone Betchen says that she likes being about to see a problem and fix it. With degrees from UPenn and Johns Hopkins, Betchen practices neurosurgery at Maimonides Medical Center, New York Methodist Hospital, and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Excited by the idea of solving health problems with devices such as the cochlear implant, Dr. Cara Stepp is working hard to build engineering solutions for people with speech problems.
