What not to do:
Before you toss those old pills in the garbage, think again! Getting rid of unused medicine requires special attention to ensure the safety of those around you. Never empty medication into your sink, toilet or storm drain. While it may seem like an easy way to keep medicines away from children and pets, disposing of medication in this way can affect your local water supply.
What to do:
Some states may offer pharmacy or community take-back programs with guidelines on how to return unused drugs to them. Contact your local pharmacy or local authority to find a program near you.
If you can’t find a program locally, take the following steps to dispose of your medication:
- Make sure that they're in an unrecognizable, sealed container and ensure that children, pets and others do not have access to the contents of the container.
- Dispose of the container in your outside trash for trash pickup.
